REDCap’s Multi-Language Management Module

Just in Pennsylvania, more than one million people speak a language other than English at home. Population science as a whole has seen a push for equitable and inclusive cross-cultural research, which engages members of groups who may not speak and understand English as well as they speak and understand other languages. Studies have found that the inclusion of multiple language options in surveys and data collection can help racial and ethnic minorities understand questionnaires and facilitate greater participation in research from these underrepresented groups. Many researchers are interested in conducting cross-cultural research, but they may not have had the tools to do so, especially when utilizing REDCap. REDCap is a powerful research tool that allows the online collection of data in the form of surveys and data entry forms. However, past iterations of REDCap have not included tools that can utilize multiple languages in the same project. Moving forward, Penn State research teams using REDCap for their research will have access to REDCap’s Multi-Language Management Module (MLM). MLM was developed specifically for researchers looking to conduct research in multiple languages, and it is compatible with many of REDCap’s inherent features. This seminar will detail basics, applications and considerations for utilizing MLM for REDCap projects.
